      • Recognize the board setup for the beginning of a chess game
      • Name the chess pieces

      Description:

      Explain how the board is setup and then set it up for one color (you can use “The Chess Story” to narrate what you are doing as you set up). Have students take turns rolling or kicking a ball to knock down pieces. You can have 2 students go at once. When a student knocks down a piece, tell them what they knocked down or ask them to name the piece. Have all the children cheer whenever someone knocks over a piece.

      Variation 1:

      Use just pawns.

      Variation 2:

      Use two balls and have two lines of students.

      Variation 3:

      Have some students help reset the pieces between kicks (be careful to stop all ball movement and kicking first!).

      Description for Parents

      In this game, the children got to knock over the pieces protecting the king by taking turns kicking balls at the pieces. The children congratulated each other when they successfully knocked over pieces.
