Time Required:
10 minutes
Tools Required:
- 4 giant knights
- Small chessboards
Chess Objective(s):
Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate how the knight moves
General Objective(s):
- Recognize the knight’s pattern
- Improve coordination
Description:
This game works well when it is used directly after completing Knight Movements.
Set up the small chessboards to form a T. Have the students line up. Direct each student to carry a knight and hop-hop-right or hop-hop-left on the chess boards. Repeat a few times so that all the students have a chance to do both directions.
Now repeat the exercise without the boards. All of the students can go at once. Alternate between the four knight sequences:
hop-hop-right
hop-hop-left
left-hop-hop
right-hop-hop
You can do repeating patterns all the way across the play area, then turn around and do a different pattern back.
Variation:
Have all the children line up and practice hopping up and down the play space like a knight, with the whole class chanting along with you as they complete the movements: “hop-hop-right”, “hop-hop-left”, “right-hop-hop”, “left-hop-hop”
Description for Parents
All of the children got to BE the knight as they practiced moving in the different knight formations: hop-hop-left, hop-hop-right, right-hop-hop, and left-hop-hop.
