Time Required:

5 minutes

Tools Required:
  • 1 bucket of white pieces
  • 1 bucket of black pieces
  • Small boards

Make sure there are the same amount of pieces in each bucket!

      Chess Objective(s):

      Students will be able to:

      • Identify chess pieces by shape
      General Objective(s):
      • Improve fine motor skills
      • Demonstrate teamwork
      • Count from 1-8

      Divide the children into 2 groups. Tell them that they have to work as a team to sort the pieces into piles – knights, queens, bishops, etc. Pawns should stay in the bucket. They may want to choose who does which type of piece – 1-2 children do knights, etc.

      Put a bucket of pieces down with each group, and then let them know when they can start! First team to finish wins.

      Ask them to count how many knights they have, bishops, etc. in their piles.

      If it goes super-fast, you can repeat so each team has a chance to win.

      Follow with piece movement review, if appropriate.

      Description for Parents

      We broke into two teams and sorted chess pieces by their shape. We also counted how many pieces we had of each shape.
