- All six of the different giant pieces (king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn)
Students will be able to:
- Identify each of the chess pieces
- Improve gross motor skills
Have the students wait on the board while the instructor sets up the pieces in a single row in the middle of the field. Line the students up at the beginning of the row of pieces and ask them to run out, touch the piece the coach selects, and run back, one at a time. Give them a high five when they get back and others will cheer as they run. Students will line up and go through the line again. Repeat several times.
After first round, increase the number of pieces the children have to touch.
Description for Parents
The coach set up the giant chess pieces in the middle of the field and had the children run out one at a time to touch a specific piece, then high five a friend when they returned to the board to set off the next runner in the relay. The coach gradually increased the number of pieces to touch as they ran.
